Robot Concept

This was a character I was contracted to create for an arena combat style VR game. I took this character from initial concept all the way to deliverable asset in Unity. Whole time for this was roughly two weeks. I utilized tools such as 3ds Max, Photoshop, and 3D coat.

The character had to be a rugged, but athletic looking robot with separated limbs because of the nature of rigging a real time 1'st person character in VR.
I started with a sketch based on visual guides like Ghost in the Shell, Black Ops 3, and Halo.

First pass on the materials. I wanted a mix of carbon fiber, plastic, and rubber with just a few pieces of metal here and there.

Started with just the fingers. Director said these were cool but too "robotic". Told me to make them more like human fingers but also "armoured"

Went too far the other way this time. Now they were too bulky and not athletic

Finally settled on this style. I mocked up a low poly to see if I could make it work with a more conservative tri count but after a few bakes I decided that more detail in the low poly was necessary

I made the palm, fingers, and knuckles all separate objects to get a clean bake. Then I threw it into 3D coat using the same materials I had created for the body.
